Dear Community Members:
It is September and I hope to see many of you during the upcoming months. (Do you remember the song See You in September by the Happenings? The harmonies are really lovely!)
Our many friends, as well as, SoCal Adaptive Sports are constantly working on developing and offering new activities. One of our friends, Building Bridges for Special Needs-Coachella Valley, led by Renee Griffin, is involved with literally "building bridges" between parents and their children and the various organizations providing services for people with disabilities. Renee produces a monthly calendar, listing a full range of events and activities for people with disabilities and their family members and friends.
I met Renee almost four years ago, after I had moved to the Coachella Valley, at a Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) resource fair. The evolution of Building Bridges has been quite incredible as you can see from their monthly calendar. The growth in the number of organizations offering opportunities to participate seems to be a great model for the United States!
Another one of our friends is Karen Bagnard of More Than Mermaids. (Check out the website which has lots of greeting cards!) Karen is a blind artist teaching adaptive art for the City of Pasadena’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. (Karen wasn’t always blind. Her blindness is a hereditary condition that she learned about over twenty years ago.) She has taught the class of developmentally delayed adults for four years. Two years ago she designed a children’s class for the City called “Coloring Outside the Lines.”
As a student and client of Braille Institute of Los Angeles, Karen has done a few small fundraisers for them with sales of her cards. She also designed their 2022 Holiday card depicting the full moon of the Winter Solstice, called “Cold Moon.” This holiday card caught my eye, especially the ones that she made with Dragons on the cover. SoCal Adaptive Sports uses Karen's cards to send greetings and thanks to many.
SoCal Adaptive Sports, collaborating with Olive Tree OT and Tami and Tali Monica, of our board of directors, is offering a Life Skills-Cooking Class and Social Dinner Event on September 12, see below. We'd love to see you to participate in making and then eating Hummus, Air fryer Pita Pizzas and Fruit Cobbler. Should be a yummy evening!
Andrea Durrett, Secretary, has 25 years of banking experience, and a Master of Business degree in organizational management. She is the VP branch manager of First Foundation in Indian Wells and has been with SoCal Adaptive Sports since we incorporated in May 2020.
Please consider making a donation and becoming a sustaining, monthly or annual donor! We appreciate every donation!
Expert Tennis/Pickleball Lessons in Collaboration with Special Olympics, Aceing Autism at Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort. Starts October 18. Registration is on a monthly basis.
We're already planning lots more events and activities for 2023 and 2024! Stay tuned!
