Message from Executive Director:

Friends,

It has been quite a week.

While I was somewhere between the Texas Panhandle and the Mississippi River, our boccia athletes were busy making SoCal Adaptive Sports proud at the USA Boccia National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska.

Several of our athletes competed against the best in the country, and the results were outstanding: two advanced to the medal rounds, and one earned a bronze medal in her classification—remarkably, just a year after picking up the sport.

That kind of progress doesn’t happen by accident. It reflects the dedication of our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families who have embraced this incredible sport.

At SoCal Adaptive Sports, we’re especially proud of our early role in bringing boccia to California. Long before most people had heard of it (or could pronounce it), our founder Mike Rosenkrantz was introducing the sport at adaptive sports expos and disability fairs, helping people discover one of the most inclusive sports in the Paralympic movement.

With the 2028 Paralympic Games coming to Los Angeles, interest in boccia is only going to grow—and that’s a very good thing. It’s one of the rare sports that truly welcomes athletes of all abilities: easy to learn, challenging to master, deeply strategic, and a lot of fun.

Congratulations to all of our athletes who represented SoCal Adaptive Sports in Omaha. Whether you brought home a medal or gained valuable experience, we are incredibly proud of you.

Speaking of journeys…

This past week I drove across the country with my son Dylan as we delivered him—and his car—back to the University of Tennessee.

Twenty-three hundred miles is a long time to spend in a car with anyone.

Fortunately, I happen to like the kid.

It turned into one of those trips I’ll remember for a long time.

We followed much of historic Route 66 along Interstate 40, stopped in Winslow, Arizona to (poorly) sing Take It Easy, watched deserts turn into forests, crossed the Mississippi, and somewhere in North Texas passed what looked like a single ranch with approximately 100,000 cattle.

I didn’t actually count them. But after a while, you stop arguing with the engineering major sitting in the passenger’s seat who has developed a complex algorithm in his head to come to that estimate.

We met great people everywhere we stopped, even running into members of the U.S. Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team on their way to training camp. Adaptive sports has a way of making the world feel smaller.

And I managed to check two more states off my personal 50-state quest: Arkansas and New Mexico.

That leaves just three: Montana, South Dakota, and Alaska.  Who else is up for some adventure?

One of the best parts of the trip was stepping outside our usual bubble.

Being from California sparked plenty of conversations—about Hollywood, Governor Newsom, and whether our cities are really as chaotic as cable news suggests.

Some of the assumptions were… creative.

We did our best to offer perspective, share that California is a big and complex place, and in turn listen to the thoughts of others.

What stood out wasn’t disagreement—it was how easy it was to talk respectfully with people who saw the world differently.

No shouting. No unfriending. No declarations of national collapse.

Just conversations, a good bit of laughter, barbecue, and a lot of Southern hospitality.

It was a good reminder that most people are far kinder—and far more reasonable—than the internet would have us believe.

Sometimes you just have to get out of your own corner of the map to remember what a remarkable country this is.

See you all soon.

Onwards,

Chris Allen
Executive Director

SoCal Adaptive Sports

Amigos,

Seguimos adelante,

Chris Allen

Wheelchair Basketball Event in Los Angeles, CA

Fun fact: This event took place at Birmingham High School, the historic site of the very first wheelchair basketball game in the United States. In 1946, paralyzed World War II veterans at the Birmingham VA Hospital in Van Nuys played the first organized wheelchair basketball game, helping launch a sport that is now played around the world. What an incredible way to celebrate the history and impact of adaptive sports!
