Message from Executive Director:
Friends,
This month marks an exciting new chapter for SoCal Adaptive Sports.
On September 1, we officially assumed operation of the Young Adult Skills (YAS) program, formerly operated by Olive Tree Occupational Therapy in Cathedral City. For the young adults and families who have been part of YAS, our first priority is simple: continue providing the supportive, engaging and welcoming program they have come to know and rely upon.
But we also want to move quickly and make sure more families have the opportunity to participate.
YAS already has a waitlist of families eager to enroll. Clearing that waitlist and getting those young adults into classes is one of our most immediate priorities. These families have been waiting for an opportunity, and we are committed to working as quickly and thoughtfully as possible to create space for them.
At the same time, we want to open the program to new families who are just learning about YAS and looking for meaningful opportunities for their young adults.
For SoCal Adaptive Sports, this is about more than taking on an existing program. It is about responding to a clear and growing need in our community.
Since our founding, we have believed that people with disabilities deserve opportunities to be active, build confidence, develop friendships and be part of their communities. Sports have been—and will continue to be—at the heart of what we do. But the needs of the people we serve don’t begin and end on a basketball court, bowling lane, boccia court or ice rink.
YAS gives us an opportunity to expand the way we fulfill our mission.
The program serves young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through small-group activities designed to build independence, strengthen life and social skills, encourage physical activity and, perhaps most importantly, create meaningful opportunities for friendship and connection.
The demand for YAS makes its importance clear. Families are actively seeking programs where their young adults can learn, grow, socialize and spend time in a safe, supportive environment. The waitlist is evidence of that need—and it is a call to action.
Our goal is not simply to maintain the program as it exists today. Our goal is to move families off the waitlist, fill available classes and expand enrollment so more young adults can participate.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will focus on increasing capacity while preserving the smaller group sizes and individualized attention that make YAS special. We will work to welcome families who have been waiting, while also making sure that families who are newly discovering the program know how to connect with us and explore enrollment.
For many young adults with disabilities, the transition out of the school system can be incredibly difficult. For years, school provides structure, activities, services, friendships and somewhere to go each day. Eventually, those services end, and families are often left asking a very difficult question:
What comes next?
Programs like YAS can be an important part of that answer.
One of the things I particularly like about YAS is that it isn’t intended to simply occupy someone’s day. Participants meet in smaller groups, typically eight to ten people, allowing staff to provide meaningful attention while creating an environment where participants can learn, exercise, socialize, laugh and develop greater independence.
That is exactly the kind of opportunity we want to make available to more families. That is the future I see for our organization: creating a community of opportunities rather than simply offering a collection of programs.
The addition of YAS also establishes something we have never had before—a dedicated program space in the Coachella Valley. Our Cathedral City location gives us a home where we can serve the families already waiting, welcome new families who are just hearing about YAS and explore additional programming for people with disabilities and their families.
Most importantly, we want to turn interest into participation.
If your family is currently on the YAS waitlist, we are working to create opportunities for you to join a class as soon as possible. If you are just learning about YAS, we want you to know that there is a place for your family in this conversation. We encourage you to reach out, learn more about the program and explore how your young adult may be able to participate.
Our message to every family is simple:
We want to welcome you.
To our existing SoCal Adaptive Sports families, athletes, volunteers, donors and partners, I hope you’re as excited about this next chapter as I am. Your support has allowed our organization to continue growing—not simply by getting bigger, but by finding new and better ways to serve people with disabilities.
YAS represents another step in that journey.
Clearing the waitlist. Filling classes. Welcoming new families. Creating more opportunities for young adults to build skills, friendships, confidence and independence.
One growing community.
Every Ability. EveryBODY.
Onwards,
Chris Allen Executive Director SoCal Adaptive Sports
Amigos,
Every Ability. EveryBODY.
Seguimos adelante,
Chris Allen Director Ejecutivo SoCal Adaptive Sports
